Motorola Charm — hands on with T-Mobile’s tiny messenger

Motorola Charm

That little bitty phone you see in that big meaty paw is the new Motorola Charm from T-Mobile.  The form factor is a first for Android, and one many of us (myself included) have been looking forward to.  While it may not be running the latest and greatest hardware, and many would say that MotoBlur hinders it, I'm going to go forward and be optomistic about what it can, and does bring to the table.

Under the hood the Charm betrays it's tiny outsides.  Android 2.1 (with MotoBlur), a 600 MHz OMAP processor, 512 MB of ROM and RAM, and all the connectivity you'd expect -- Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and a 1700/2100 GSM radio for T-Mobile 3G.  The real sore spot is the screen.  At 2.8 inches,, and 320x240 resolution, you might have trouble using this as you would a 'standard' Android phone.  The rear mounted track pad (TrackBack) and full qwerty help out.  A lot.  I'll be sure to put it to the test for a bit and we'll see just how it measures up after.  For now, enjoy the video after the break.

BlackBerry Curve 3G heading to Verizon in two colors

Verizon Rebate Form Curve 3G

Today we got out hands on the latest rebate form from Verizon and from the looks of it the Curve 3G should be heading the way of Big Red. Much like the 8530 followed its 8520 sibling to Verizon, the Curve 3G will be landing on the CDMA carrier after it has shown up on Rogers and T-Mobile. The entry-level device will come in both Charcoal Gray and Fuchsia and although this rebate is set to end on October 31st no exact release date is available.

From the forums: Custom boot animation

Android boot animation

Fresh from our Droid X forums, Natemz brings us a couple of cool custom boot animations. On the left, a spinning Android logo. On the right another for some little Android site we've heard a little bit about. You're going to need to be rooted, and there are a couple steps involved. But that's a small price to pay for looking good. Video of the Android logo animation is after the break, and check out the forums link for the whole shebang. [Android Central Forums]

Save battery life on your Android phone with Advanced Task Killer

As much as I love the Android OS on mobile devices, the battery life leaves much to be desired. If tasks or applications get out of hand and start eating up memory or CPU cycles, you can kiss your battery goodbye. I have watched the battery meter on my phone go from full to 3/4 before my very eyes.

It seems that no matter how sparingly I use my networking, Bluetooth, GPS, etc., the battery still drains. This problem is so pervasive that I often see Android users carrying multiple chargers and multiple means of charging their mobile devices — USB cables plugged into nearly every computer they own, car chargers, solar chargers… whatever it takes. It doesn’t have to be this way.

One way to fight against unnecessary battery drainage is to use Advanced Task Killer, which allows you to manually kill running tasks, set up ignore lists, and much more. You can purchase the tool from the Android Market or get the free version. (Note: I won’t walk you through the installation because it’s a simple process. Be sure that you install Advanced Task Killer and not Task Manager.)

Configuration

Once Advanced Task Killer is installed, follow these steps to configure the application:

  1. Open your Applications menu and click the Advanced Task Killer icon.
  2. When the application is open, click the Menu button, and then click the Settings button.
  3. From the Settings window, you can configure the app to suit your needs. I highly recommend these settings because they seem to be the best for keeping rogue apps from eating away at the battery: Enable Auto Start, Enable Show Notification, Default click action: Select/Unselect, Default Long Press Action: Popup.

Functionality

Let’s look at some functionality that will increase the chances of saving your battery.

The popup menu
This is where you really get control of your applications. When you open Advanced Task Killer, you will see a list of running applications. If you long press one of those applications, a popup menu will appear that will allow you to select from the following:

  • Kill
  • Select/Unselect
  • Switch to
  • Ignore
  • Force Stop/Detail

From that list, if one of those apps is an app you want to make sure is not killed by Advanced Task Killer, you should select Ignore. Now when you kill running applications, that application will be exempt from the list.

Quick kill
I tend to notice when my phone (HTC Hero) is having issues because it will start to get warm. When this happens, I have a quick fix. If you add the Advanced Task Killer to one of your home screens as a widget (not a shortcut), when you click that icon, it will kill all applications, freeing up memory and CPU cycles. It’s the fastest way to keep your mobile device under control. (Make sure you do not add the application shortcut to the screen because this will only open the application.)

Give it a go

If you decide to download Advanced Task Killer, report back to let the TechRepublic community know if you get longer battery life.

BlackBerry Torch 9800 review from the perspective of a Power Traveler

BlackBerry Torch 9800 Review - Power Traveler

The BlackBerry 9800 Torch has been touted as the "best BlackBerry that RIM has produced." While many have mixed feelings about RIM's newest sizzling hot device (aka. The Torch), I was given the task of reviewing this device from the prospective of a person who travels/vacations a lot.

While OS6 boast some significant changes, I believe that OS6 was released prematurely. OS6 is still a bit too buggy to have been released on the Torch...even if the 9800 is true to its tagline: "Less than an evolutionary leap, more like a triple axle."

Android Central Editors’ app picks for Sept. 3, 2010

apps

The Android market is one of my favorite places to spend time while on my Motorola Droid, but cruising the market is not nearly as fun as messing around with some of the great applications that are available. Trying to decide which of the hundreds of thousands of applications are a solid starting point can be a daunting task, but we love to help you out with that. Let's take a look at some great applications that our writers use on their devices.

DataViz, Makers of Documents To Go, apparently acquired and now owned by Research In Motion

DataViz acquired by RIM

DataViz, makers of the popular Documents To Go application, announced sad news today for Palm fans. Though the company started out developing for Palm, they are not going to proceed in developing the Documents To Go solution for Palm WebOS. You can read all about that here.

More interesting than this news from DataViz though is the news they didn't announce..... they were bought by RIM!! Though neither company has publicly announced it (yet), multiple sources have confirmed to us that RIM recently acquired DataViz for a reported $50 million cash (not material to RIM, so they didn't have to disclose it publicly as they have done with other acquisitions like the QNX one). Jump on to LinkedIn and you can also quickly find that lots of former DataViz employees have recently switched up their profiles to Research In Motion as their current employer.

Yet another interesting acquisition by RIM. My guess is this is a bit of an enterprise play - put a BES in your business and every device gets the full version of Documents To Go for free. It would be sweet if that was the case for consumers too!! Add this bit of news to the mix and it's no surprise then that DataViz isn't persuing development for Palm... I'm guessing with time they may start to reduce or phase out work for other non-BlackBerry OEMs too (that one is just a hunch though).

I'd say it's a smart buy for RIM. What do you think?!

Nominations will close this coming Tuesday at Midnight PST. From there the CrackBerry Academy will work through the nominations and argue back and forth to determine the top five finalists in every category, who will then compete in the community vote which will happen here on the blogs later next week.
